Review
“…though this “biography” of the building takes a day-in-the-life look at life within it, Carlier also notes how drastically those days differed as the palace’s purpose changed from 1682 to the present. In addition, the book examines how these many “lives” of Versailles have been immortalized…photographer Francis Hammond clearly knows we like to gasp at grandeur, but he also cannily catches the more subtle details. The result is a tour of the palace that takes the reader not merely through its spaces, but also its times.” -Metrosource

I looked forward to this latest in books on Versailles of which I own in excess of 100 different titles. My glee was spoiled when I attempted to actually read it. It is literally the only volume of any book I possess that requires a magnifying glass to enjoy. (Try making out the text on page 180 for example.) At the risk of serious damage to my eyesight I did scan the pages in hopes of discovering some little known history of the palace that I had never run across. No, even the content is not worth the effort. (And, who needs the insertion of the occasional model sporting a Dior gown?) I did wonder if this "handy-size" book was originally intended to be a cocktail table volume of a size to show off some new and revealing photography. It does have an attractive and eye-catching cover, but, alas, there the fascination ends. I can't wait to return it.Terry Allen, High Point, North Carolina
A real shame. This book looks like it could have been quite interesting, with a different take on Versailles both from the text and the photography. Sadly, we will never know, because the type size of this book is absolutely minuscule . . . and to add insult to injury, this tiny text is frequently composited over densely elaborate backgrounds. It is, quite simply, impossible to read. (And my vision is considerably better than 20/20.) Had it been a coffee table-sized book with normal-sized type, it could have been a gorgeous volume. But at its mini-sized 9 inches x 6 inches, it is just ridiculous. What a disappointment. One has to wonder what the author, photographer, designer, editor, and publisher were possibly thinking. Its design is quite opulent . . . this book was not cheap to publish. It even comes in a crimson red slipcase that is quite beautifully done. But at the microscopically diminutive size of the type, and its overlaying on dense backgrounds, it is just too frustrating. Sadly, you will not gain any further insight into a day at Versailles, but if you attempt to read it you WILL get a Versailles-sized migraine. If you are interested in the history and cultural infrastructure of Versailles, instead opt for the excellent "Versailles: A Biography of a Palace" by Tony Spawforth for the facts, and the classic "Versailles" by Jean-Marie Perouse de Montclos and Robert Polidori, for the photography. (Or for a more recent take on "Versailles," which includes sections of the palace more recently opened to the public, "Versailles" by Valérie Bajou.)
A day at Versailles is part of a series of four books, the others being about the chateaux Vaux-le-Vicomte, Fontainebleau and 'a day with Marie-Antoinette'; al four books our beautiful in their own right with lots and lots of pictures and interesting facts. An easy and interesting read and a must have for royalty fans.
It is a lovely little book. My only criticism is the size of the print. It is very small and some may need a magnifying glass!
BEAUTIFUL picture book, good text though not much of it. A wonderful gift for someone who loves Versailles already or who would love to go
