Not at all helpful if you are a novice planning an AMTRAK trip. Contains only basic information readily available on the AMTRAK website + a brief history of railroad in the USA. Seems to be geared toward international travelers who are not familiar with USA or basic regulations. I was very disappointed - was hoping for info on how to decide when to purchase a rail pass vs individual tickets; tips for when to purchase, how to obtain discounts (others than those listed on the AMTRAK website and repeated in the book). Gives a one - two sentence description of most stops on the amtrak lines, but no useful information - like how long does the train usually stop? is there time to get off and get back on? what to expect if you book a sleeper car. .

I purchased this book as I was planning to travel on the 30 day rail pass with Amtrak. From the time I purchased the book to the time I purchased the ticket Amtrak actually changed a number of policies, in cluding those associated with the rail passes. Therefore, this book is actually not correct with regard to them. Not their fault, it's all on Amtrak.That said, the book, designed for foreigners, is helpful in planning out itineraries and finding out local info about smaller stops along the way. It contains a great deal of information regarding tipping, exchanging money and other cultural information good for the foreign traveler.As an American, I found the book still useful for knowing the routes and general timetables of the trains, though amtrak does provide a National Timetable for free at larger stations. Still I like having the book with me on the road to reference any small stops and interesting facts along the way.

The things this book does well:* It shows the stops along the routes. I loved the maps showing where the line stops.* It shows the points of interest along the way. If you're riding the train, this book tells you what you're seeing along the way when you look out the window.What I was hoping for:* What I really wanted was a listing of services at particular stops, not just at the major cities. What are ground transportation options? What about nearby hotels?Apparently, if you don't disembark in a metropolitan area, you're stuck at the train station, maybe in the middle of the night - unless a local comes to pick you up.Bottom line?I'm glad I got the book. I keep flipping around in it. But it's not the comprehensive resource I had hoped.

Having looked at several other books on train travel, I believe that this is the one you need to have when embarking on a journey with Amtrak. With the price of gas having gone up as much as it has, there is still a whole land to see, so I highly recommend this book. We used it extensively on a 28-state, almost 9,000-mile trip. The book gives plenty of things to look for and helped us to better understand the geography (and landmarks) we were seeing. Each route is specifically detailed, including the stops. There are also sections with important information that should be read before embarking. I notice that the 7th edition is due this fall, so there were a few errors (scheduling, stopping, etc) that I'm sure will be corrected. So if you are not leaving until next year, you may want to wait for the newest edition. But again, don't leave home for Amtrak without this important guide.

I traveled by train in Germany, but have done very little in the USA. Now that I am retired I would like to by a pass and try it out. I hate flying, so this seems like a great way to travel and see parts of the country. I talked to a man while in New Orleans and he gets a month long pass each year and travels around the country visiting friends and places of interest.

Most of the book is the history of rail travel getting into train engines etc. But near the end there are some itineraries that might help someone planning a trip. I have gone on my first extended train trip and really enjoyed it and I am now planning another. So if you like trains, that is, for their engines and history this is the book for you. If you want to travel around, take a train trip and as I did, you'll talk to people who done this all the time.

Very informative book. My wife and I are taking Amtrak this spring back east, and this book as been most helpful understanding what to expect, how to prep, and improve our overall experience.

This is probably the best book I found that gives you detail and Information on each stop that Amtrak services. Plus it gives you things to watch out for as youtravel aboard on Amtrak. Is a kind of book that you read before you goes and use it when you do goes. It gaves me the kind og Information that I would need for my search as I will be using this book while I'm traveling through the Country for a month on Amtrak. So whatever you do, if your looking to travel on Amtrak or not and want to know more about and where Amtrak goes then Get the book you won't be disppointed!
