I have noted in other reviews, that I am not a fan of the "star" system for rating/review. In the end, the real question for a reader is should they buy this book and is it worth the value. I think it is. Having said that, most of my review will be "critical" (not necessarily in the negative sense, but in the sense of how this could be an outstanding book with a little editing).I grew up in Michigan, and have spent a fair amount of time photographing there, especially in the Upper Peninsula, where the author once lived. I have heard of his legendary workshops, and even ran into one of them a few years back and had a brief chance to introduce myself to John and speak to him. My takeaway was what I expected from having several of his books in my library - a very nice man.But about the book. I want to note that any book review of this nature is going to be subjective. We all learn and perceive differently. What doesn't work for me my be perfect for you. There is a LOT of good information here! But you really have to WORK for it. I do not mean in an intellectual sense. Rather, the style and presentation of the book makes it hard work to get to the meat of the matter. The book appears to have been intended to be written in a "conversational" style. It really, really needs some hard, professional editing! I have no problem with informal writing - in fact prefer it. But in this case, it feels (way too much) like he is trying to have a casual conversation with us. I am sure that works for his workshops. But it doesn't translate well to written instruction. It gets "in the way" so much that at times I rolled my eyes, said to myself, "get on with it," and nearly put the book down. It took effort in some cases to hang in. The author is a talented photographer and presumably, teacher. But a comedian, he is not, and the often lame humor detracts, in my view, to a written instruction book. In so many cases it is just not funny, and it digresses and detracts from the learning experience (don't get me wrong - I have a sense of humor - and appreciate humor. It's just not very well done and does not flow well here). The author is prone to "$10 dollar" words when a "$1 dollar" word would suffice and be more to the point. He is also prone to flowery phrases, sometimes used in inconsistent ways throughout the book. I believe it would be more effective, in my view, to just say it directly. And time and again, the author wanders (way) off topic, to talk about this or that that has nothing to do with the subject matter at hand.Organizationally, it is problematic. It is unduly repetitive to the point of being redundant. I understand the teaching concept of repetition. It works well in lecture and conversation. Perhaps in writing, it works by stating your concept, explaining it, and summarizing. But in this book it just seems to fly in, often seemingly off-topic, and after a while, the "deja vu" nature of the comment or advice is annoying. Often, it seems like the bold section captions are followed by off-topic, and sometimes irrelevant material, and even sometimes appear to be inconsistent with advice or statements made elsewhere in the book.I want to summarize by saying there really is a lot of very good information in this book. I will keep it in my library for my highlighted portions. But I think it would go from a not very effective try at this, to an outstanding book, by re-organizing, distilling and simplifying the information and its presentation. Sure, it might be shorter. But that would not be a bad thing.I do no agree with the couple others here who give the book a low-star rating because of the print quality of the image. It is a paperback book and it is assuredly not intended to be a coffee-table picture book. As an instructional text, the images are fine. They do what they are supposed to do: illustrate. I agree with another reviewer, that I would in some cases like more practical detail. For example, every image gives caption information - but none of them give rationale for the settings. That would be extremely useful for us, "learn by example," types.
My reason for purchasing the book was to take a look at the latest technology in flash and to use it for wildlife work. I am a wildlife biologist, scientist, and former studio photographer and I was expecting something useful. Unfortunately, the book is poorly organized, written, and edited, which means the reader has to rewrite the text to make it useful. In fact, to give the author a fair try I tried rewriting the pages that seemed useful and the process was too frustrating to continue. Clearly, the author knows his business BUT he needs to get a technical writer/editor that is familiar with the subject to make the information useful AND him seem professional and knowledgeable.
I loved all of Gerlach’s previous books, so I was eager to read the Outdoor Flash Photography book. And I know John from having attended his hummingbird multiple flash photography workshop in British Columbia. I photograph everything, but my primary interest is landscape photography. I just got my book and jumped right to chapter 10 – Flash in the Landscape. Often, I have trouble getting my flash to add enough light to portions of my landscape images. Chapter 10 is a gold mine of new information for me. I knew to increase the ISO, open the aperture, move the flash closer to the subject, and zoom the flash head to concentrate the light emitted by the flash, but John covers twenty ways to help the flash light large objects, multiple objects, or objects quite a distance away – even more than 100 yards at night! It has completely changed how I think about using flash, and will pay enormous dividends in my landscape shooting. This book is amazing in both content and instructional images. I also enjoy close-up photography and I love how he teaches how to determine what you want the ambient light to do first, and then make the flash do its work. The technique of using flash as the main light, and ambient light as the fill light is a complete reversal of how I used flash only as a fill light in times past. This is a truly remarkable book that is packed with innovative information for those who want to photograph natural objects. This book does cover flash and outdoor portrait photography a little, but really it is a book about how to use flash for natural subjects that is not covered in any other flash book that I have seen. Chapter ten all by itself made this purchase of great value to me. If your goal is to shoot way better outdoor images by mastering flash, then get this book.Jason Steinle MD
Might have great content, but I'm having a hard time getting past the low-quality photo prints in the book. With so many other photography books with gorgeous and inspiring prints, it's hard to even get interested in one that's far less visually engaging. This is a very visual subject, and the photos should match that.
I have been a hobbyist photographer for almost 30 years. After retirement I’ve been spending 4 to 5 days in the field with camera in hand. I felt my work was getting stale and wanted to do more with flash. I learned several new techniques. The chapter on hummingbird photography was worth the price of the book.
There is so many information in this book. I think the intermediate or advanced photographer will profit the most. For a beginner the stuff can be to over helming. But if you understand the flash already this book will deepen your knowledge and give you some different approach. Very enjoyable.
This book is very well written and covers the two major brands of cameras on how to use all the provided information with either system. If your looking to produce "National Geographic" quality photos of Humming Birds, this book will show you how to accomplish it. A good book to add to your library!
Gerlach does a fabulous job at explaining flash, written in a nice style. Very, very helpful for anyone wishing to understand flash photography. Well done. Joe McDonald
